Acyclovir is a powerful antiviral medicine most commonly used to treat outbreaks of the herpes simplex virus, shingles and chickenpox. This medication works by targeting the herpes virus and inhibiting it from spreading to other cells.
The herpes simplex virus can lay dormant in the body for years, but when it first surfaces you may experience some of the following symptoms:

Only take this drug as directed by your doctor. This drug is taken orally by mouth following a meal and may be prescribed to be taken 2-5 times per day. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you realize you have missed it and keep taking your other regular scheduled doses.
There are some side effects which you may experience when taking this drug, although they are rare and generally do not occur.
Only use this drug as directed by a doctor. Women who are pregnant, expecting or nursing should not take this drug without first talking to their doctor. Those who currently are suffering from kidney disease may not be able to take this drug as it is processed in the kidneys. Consumption of alcohol may accelerate the side effects of this drug. Exorcise caution when driving as this drug may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
Always make sure to tell your doctor about any and EVERY single drug that you are currently taking in order to avoid any potentially dangerous drug interactions from occurring. Those who are currently taking drugs containing: fosphenytoin, phenytoin, probenecid, or zidovudine may not be able to take Acyclovir.
