Aldara (imiquimod) is a very powerful topical cream which is most commonly used to treat external genital warts (EGW) caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and actinic keratosis (AK) on the surface of the skin. Aldara offers a painless and non-intrusive way for suffers of these symptoms to treat their skin conditions without having to use surgical procedures or liquid nitrogen therapy (freezing).
AK is most commonly found in people with fair skin, occurring on the face and the scalp of sufferers. It can range in size from a speck to over an inch long, and can form different shapes and colors, sometimes sensitive and other times not. In about 10-15% of the cases of AK there is a chance that it can develop further into a form of skin cancer that requires surgery, if left untreated.
Aldara has shown a tremendous success rate during the clinical trials. Vehicle groups of men and women demonstrated that in 82% of the cases Aldara was successful at completely eradicating all signs and growth of external genital warts. Furthermore, it should be noted that of this 82% group, they all showed cessation of their warts in 12 weeks or less. It should also be noted that the HPV virus can lie dormant and can reoccur in the future even if it has already been treated using Aldara cream.
In test studies Aldara showed an amazing 82% success rate when used to treat external genital warts. In most cases the warts were completed eradicated after a 12 week session of therapy. Genital warts can still reoccur even after you have treated them with Aldara, known as a reoccurrence, because the HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) can still lay dormant in other areas of the skin. Aldara will work for most people, most of the time. Make sure to ask your doctor if Aldara cream is right for you.
There are some potential side effects that could occur when you are taking this prescription topical cream to treat your symptoms. It should be noted that during the clinical trials these side effects occurred less than 5% of the time.
While this drug may be right for most people, always consult with your doctor before using this or any other prescription drugs. Aldara may not be right for women who are pregnant, expecting or who are currently nursing a child because it is unknown whether or not Aldara can be secreted in the breast milk of a mother. Additionally, Aldara may not be right for children under the ages of 18 years old. Ask your doctor if Aldara cream is right for you.
Always make sure that you disclose to your physician all of the drugs that you are currently taking, whether or not they are prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, or even herbal remedies to avoid any potential drug interactions when using Aldara topical cream. Women who are pregnant, expecting or nursing may or may not be able to use Aldara cream. Only use Aldara cream as directed by your doctor, and never use Aldara more than the directed amount of times during a day.
