What is Allegra?

Allegra (fexofenadine) is a prescribed antihistamine drug which is used to treat patients that suffer from allergies including: seasonal allergies, hay fever and other allergic reactions such as hives.

Common Seasonal Allergies Include:

There are several common seasonal allergies that many people experience year in and year out. Here are a few that you may already know about:

Animal dander allergies—when cats and dogs shed their fur coats, dander from their hair populates the air, which can cause allergies
Hay Fever—one of the most common forms of seasonal allergies
Pollen—during springtime when the flowers and trees bloom
Dust mites—caused by dust particles and organisms living on dust in the air

How is Hay Fever Treated?

Hay fever is a result of the immune system overreacting to defend the body against allergic foreign particles that are breathed in. Generally doctors will prescribe a form of antihistamines, such as Allegra, to counter the symptoms of the allergies.

How to Take Allegra:

You should only take Allegra as directed to by your physician or a pharmacist. Take each dosage with a full glass of water. If you miss a dose try and take it at the first chance that you get. If it is close to the time that you would take your next dose, skip the missed dose and keep taking your doses as scheduled. In the event of an overdose, seek medical treatment.

Allegra Side Effects:

Like all prescription drugs, there are some potential side effects that you may experience when taking Allegra, they include:

Headache
Cold
Backache
Nausea
Coughing
Dizziness
Drowsiness
Menstrual Pain
Flu-like symptoms
Diarrhea
In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction can occur which may involve the following symptoms: swelling of throat, lips mouth or tongue; or hives—if you experience any of these rare yet serious side effects, STOP taking Allegra and seek immediate medical assistance

Allegra Precautions:

Women who are pregnant or nursing should first inform their doctor before using this drug. Avoid using anti-acids such as Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, or Pepcid Complete close to when you take Allegra, as they can decrease how effective this drug is in your system. Do not take this drug with fruit juice as it can cause a reaction to occur.

Allegra Interactions:

Always make sure that you tell your doctor about any and ALL drugs that you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies, in order to avoid experiencing any potential drug interactions. Make sure that you address any and all questions you may have regarding this drug with your physician.
