Famvir (famciclovir) is an antiviral drug which is prescribed to treat and prevent the symptoms of the herpes simplex virus and outbreaks of shingles. When taken as directed, it can lessen the severity and the duration of the herpes simplex virus.
The herpes simplex virus can lay dormant in the system for quite some time, however when it does finally surface it is noticeably obvious, generally occurring as clusters of legions or blisters in and around the genitals, the anus and the mouth.
Shingles can show up at any time and the associated symptoms are as follows: a rash including clusters of blisters on the upper torso and neck, which can bleed and ooze puss as they heal and sometimes cause scarring. This rash is usually accompanied by a feeling of nausea, flu-like symptoms and a headache.
Only take this drug exactly as directed to by your doctor. This drug is taken orally by mouth with water following a meal. If you miss a dose of Famvir take the next dose as soon as you can. Keep taking your other scheduled doses until you have used the entire prescription, or until otherwise directed to by your doctor.
Like all prescription drugs, there are some side effects that may occur when taking this drug including:
Taking this drug will not prevent you from infecting other people with the herpes virus. Women who are pregnant or nursing should first talk to their doctor before taking this drug as it can be secreted in the breast milk. People who currently suffer from kidney disease may not be able to take this drug.
Always tell your doctor about any and ALL drugs that you are currently taking, even if they over-the-counter, to prevent any potentially dangerous drug interactions from occurring. People who are currently taking drugs containing Probenecid (Benemid) may not be able to take this drug. Let your doctor know if you have any allergies to any of the ingredients in this drug or any other drug before taking Famvir.
