Propecia (finasteride) is the only FDA approved once-per-day oral therapy treatment for male pattern-baldness. Propecia works by targeting the DHT (dihydrotesterone) in the scalp from reaching the hair follicles and causing them to shrink, generally resulting in thinning hair and hair loss. When DHT is unable to reach the hair follicles, healthy hair can re-grow and hair may even grow back in some places that have become bald. Propecia offers men what no other drug can, the ability to regain the exterior appearance that they thought they would never have again: their hair.
Propecia has shown tremendous success rates in recent clinical trials that were conducted by the makers of the drug, Merk, and were reviewed and acknowledged by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The results of these five year studies concluded that Propecia worked for 90% of the men who took it, and that 2 out of 3 of those men who took Propecia to treat their hair loss experienced the growth of new hair in addition to stopping the spread of their male pattern-baldness.
While the success rate of Propecia is phenomenal, it may not work for everybody. You must commit at least 3 to 6 months of time to really see results from using Propecia, as hair takes a while to grow. If you do not see noticeable results within 12 months of taking Propecia, then the drug may not work for you. Keep in mind 9 out of 10 adult males will see results from using this hair loss prevention drug.
Like most prescription drugs, Propecia does have some side effects which can occur. During the clinical trials these side effects occurred in only 2% of the cases. Furthermore, the side effects ceased when the patients stopped using Propecia and in cases where the patients continued using Propecia, the side effects also ceased. The side effects include:
If you experience any of these side effects be sure to let your physician know about them.
Always consult with your doctor before taking Propecia. Only take Propecia as directed by your doctor. Make sure to tell your doctor about all the medications that you are currently taking and any drug allergies that you may have to avoid interactions. Propecia is not for women or children. Pregnant women should avoid bare-hand contact with Propecia to avoid serious side effects and complications that could occur with their baby.
Propecia should only be taken as directed. Be sure to disclose to your physician any known drug allergies and all the current drugs you are taking to avoid any interactions. If you are planning on getting a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) screening done in the near future make sure to inform your doctor that you are currently taking Propecia as it can affect the screening results.
The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX conducted a clinical study that was led by Dr. Ian Thompson, and which yielded some surprising results as to the effectiveness of the active ingredient in the hair loss drug Propecia (finasteride). Lower-dose versions of finasteride are already being used to treat men suffering from an enlarged prostate, but now study results conclude that daily usage of Propecia can actually reduce the risk of prostate cancer by as much as 25%. “Propecia (finasteride) is the first drug found to reduce the risk of prostate cancer,” said Dr. Thompson, “The drug worked for men at low risk for prostate cancer, as well as those at high risk.”
