As with any pill, there are pros and cons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The benefits of Paxil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Available in immediate-release and extended-release prescription forms, it can be taken as part of a combination therapy with other medications.<\/p>\n<p>Paxil falls under the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin your body produces. Your dosage depends on several factors, such as how severe your condition is, your age, other medications you take and which conditions you\u2019re being treated for.<\/p>\n<p>For most people taking it for depression, anxiety, OCD or PTSD, Paxil can improve your mood, decrease your feelings of compulsions and obsessions, decrease your anxiety and panic and decrease nightmares and flashbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Women taking Paxil for premenstrual dysphoric disorder may experience decreased mood swings, anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability and tiredness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The side effects\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the side effects associated with Paxil aren\u2019t life-threatening. They include nausea and dizziness weakness, sleepiness, sweating, decreased appetite, constipation, dry mouth and yawning. Some men may experience impotence, delayed ejaculation or a decreased interest in sex.<\/p>\n<p>If these side effects are severe or don\u2019t go away, talk to your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s rare, some people do experience more serious side effects, such as worsening of mood, hallucinations, muscle twitching, racing heartbeat, vomiting, high or low blood pressure, eye problems, seizures, abnormal bleeding, headaches or bone fractures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drugs to avoid when taking it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a few drugs that can cause dangerous issues when combined with Paxil or the generic version, paroxetine. Don\u2019t take it if you\u2019re taking Thioridazine, Pimozide, MAO inhibitors, Tryptophan (which is found in dietary supplements).
