There are some very promising clinical trials for new drugs that may eventually help slow it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone you love has Alzheimer\u2019s, or you\u2019re worried about developing itself, here are some of the trials underway that may change how we prevent or treat the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drugs that target toxic proteins<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key characteristic of Alzheimer\u2019s the buildup of beta-amyloid and tau proteins, which create plaques in the brain that hinder communication between cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not surprising, 52% of the phase III clinical trials on Alzheimer\u2019s are focused on testing drugs that target these two proteins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Therapies that target toxic proteins and aging processes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few earlier phase trials that target not only the two proteins, but also the aging processes that may exacerbate the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The include processes such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Changes in gene regulation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Metabolic dysfunctions (these can cause cellular damage within the brain)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 a decrease in synapses (the connections between brain cells which help them communicate)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 vascular dysfunction (less oxygen to the brain means more cognitive issues)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 chronic inflammation (which has been linked to decreased blood flow to the brain and a thinning of the cerebral cortex)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur success in fighting Alzheimer\u2019s disease will likely come from combination therapy\u2014finding drugs that have positive effects on thermal functions that happen as people age,\u201d explains Dr. Howard Fillit, a specialist from the Alzheimer\u2019s Drug Discovery Foundation and senior author of a new review published in the journal <em>Neurology<\/em>.\u201cCombination therapies are the standard of care for other major diseases of aging, such as heart disease, cancer and hypertension, and will likely be necessary in treating Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other dementias.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s no cure for Alzheimer&#8217;s, but you can read up on some of the latest drug trials to find out what options may be on the horizon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":13201,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[690],"tags":[823,841,889,719],"class_list":["post-13115","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wellness","tag-aging","tag-alzheimers","tag-memory","tag-wellness"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13115","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=13115"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/13115\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=13115"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=13115"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=13115"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
