This goes\nbeyond previous observational evidence that linked the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The new study on\nerectile dysfunction and diabetes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team of researchers from the UK looked at data from more\nthan 220,000 men from three different populations: the UK Biobank, the Partners\nHealthCare BioBank and the Estonian Genome Center of the University of Tartu\ncohort. Of these men, 6,000 had experienced erectile dysfunction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using genetic analysis to seek correlations between ED,\nweight and diabetes, they found that men with a genetic predisposition to type\n2 diabetes had a higher risk of ED. According to the researchers, the good news\nis that if men can reduce their risk of diabetes, they will probably be less\nlikely to developed erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Achieving \u201cremission\u201d\nfrom diabetes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous research published in Medical News Today found that\nthere is such a thing as \u201ctotal remission\u201d for type 2 diabetes. The study\nsuggested that losing around 33 pounds, on average, would help essentially\n\u201creverse\u201d type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur finding is important, as diabetes is preventable, and\nindeed one can now achieve \u2018remission\u2019 from diabetes with weight loss, as\nillustrated in recent clinical trials,\u201d explains Professor Michael Holmes of\nthe Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford. \u201cThis\ngoes beyond finding a genetic link to erectile dysfunction to a message that is\nof widespread relevance to the general public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study was published in the <em>American Journal of Human Genetics.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ED in the United\nStates<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the National Institute of Diabetes and\nDigestive and Kidney Diseases, nearly 30 million men in the United States are\naffected by erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common risk factors include smoking, age and being\noverweight. Other conditions besides diabetes can predispose men to erectile\ndysfunction.
