{"id":13299,"date":"2019-02-11T08:30:11","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T08:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/squad\/?p=13299"},"modified":"2019-02-11T08:30:11","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T08:30:11","slug":"manage-stress-by-thinking-of-your-partner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/relationships\/manage-stress-by-thinking-of-your-partner\/","title":{"rendered":"Manage Stress by Thinking of Your Partner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re experiencing stress, a new study suggests that you\nshould think about your partner giving you support can help you cope better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stress alleviated by\nrelationships<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research comes from a team of University of Arizona\npsychologists who had 102 volunteers undertake a stressful task. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The participants were told to dip one foot into water that\nwas between 38 and 40 degrees. The researchers measured the volunteers\u2019 heart\nrate, blood pressure and heart rate variability before, during and after they\ndipped their foot in the cold water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the volunteers were in long-term relationships. The\nexperiment involved splitting them into three groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Group #1 had their partners sitting next to them (without\ntalking) while dipping their foot in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Group #2 was told to imagine receiving support from their\npartner while dipping their foot in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Group #3 was told to think about their day (not about\ntheir partner) while dipping their foot in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The findings on\nstress, blood pressure and love<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although all three groups saw their heart rate and heart\nrate variability remain consistent throughout the experiment, the groups that\nhad their partner present (Group #1) or whose members were told to think about\ntheir partner providing support (Group #2) had lower blood pressure than those\nwho simply thought about the events of their day (Group #3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis suggests that one way being in a romantic relationship\nmight support people\u2019s health is through allowing people to better cope with\nstress and lower levels of cardiovascular reactivity to stress across the day,\u201d\nsays Kyle Bourassa, a senior study author. \u201cAnd it appears that thinking of\nyour partner as a source of support can be just as powerful as actually having\nthem present.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers point out, however, that this study\u2019s\nvolunteers were college undergrads.
