New\nresearch indicates that sleep deprivation numbs the brain\u2019s ability to kill\npain, increasing your sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Determining pain\nthreshold<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team from the University of California in Berkeley carried\nout research on 24 healthy young adults who had no pain-related disorders or\ntrouble sleeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They recorded the volunteers\u2019 pain threshold after plenty of\nsleep using fMRIs, then applied heat to the participants\u2019 legs at increasing\nlevels until they reached each person\u2019s pain threshold. Then, they did it all\nagain after the volunteers stayed up all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The results after no\nsleep<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team found that when the volunteers hadn\u2019t gotten any\nsleep, the part of the brain associated with pain sensitivity was hyperactive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, they found that after a night with no sleep,\nthe nucleus accumbens, which releases dopamine to increase pleasure and relieve\npain, had less activity than usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make matters worse, the team discovered that the insula,\nthe part of the brain that assesses pain signals and get the body prepared to\nreact, was underactive after the all-nighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, after a sleepless night, the participants had three\nfactors working against them: the pain-sensing region of the brain was\namplified. the part that serves as a natural analgesia was blocked and the part\nof the brain that prepared the body to react to pain was underactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAcross the group, [the participants] were feeling\ndiscomfort at lower temperatures, which shows that their own sensitivity to\npain had increased after inadequate sleep,\u201d says the study\u2019s lead author, Adam\nKrause. \u201cThe injury is the same, but the difference is how the brain assesses\nthe pain without sufficient sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More proof <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers also surveyed more than 230 adults to ask about\npain sensitivity levels and sleep patterns.
