Worse still, they can reoccur. Obviously,\nany tool to help predict the likelihood of another painful bout would be helpful,\nespecially if it helps encourage those at high risk to do more to prevent them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Crunching the kidney\nstone data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A research team from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota\nused data from 3,364 participants who had a total of 4,951 kidney stone episodes\nto identify patterns in who was at the greatest risk of recurring incidents. The\ndata was taken from the Rochester (Minnesota) Epidemiology Project from 1984 to\n2017. The scientists found these people tended to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 be male<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 be younger<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 be overweight (i.e., had a higher BMI)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 have a family history of kidney stones<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 (for women) have had previous pregnancies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 had kidney stones in the \u201clower pole\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 had 3-6 mm stones (vs. smaller or larger)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Updating the old\nprediction tool<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A previous tool used to predict the chances of future\nincidents used 11 factors, but the tool wasn\u2019t particularly accurate at\npredicting future episodes for those who had already had at least two\noccurrences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new tool uses 13 factors, including things they learned\nfrom analyzing the data from the 3,364 participants, as well as race, kidney\nstone history and responses to questions about sex.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach of the risk factors we identified [is] entered into\nthe model, which then calculates an estimate of the risk of having another kidney\nstone in the next 5 or 10 years,\u201d explains researcher Dr. John Lieske. He added\nthat someone who has a higher risk of recurrence ay have more \u201centhusiasm for\nadopting dietary measures and\/or starting drug regimens to prevent future\nattacks.\u201d\n\n\n\nThe research was published in the journal <em>Mayo Clinic Proceedings <\/em>in February\n2019.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About 1 in 11 Americans get kidney stones, which can be incredibly painful for some people.
