If that\u2019s true, it makes sense that previous studies of the risks of alcohol (often done on people over age 50) couldn\u2019t account for those under 50 who had died, meaning they could be flawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous studies have found that drinking alcohol could\nactually have a protective effect when consumed in low to moderate amounts. But\nmost of the research was done on volunteers over 50 and they were generally\nobservational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reinvestigating\nalcohol-related deaths<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lead author of the new study, Dr. Timothy Naimi of\nBoston Medical Center, had voiced his concerns in a 2017 edition of the journal\n<em>Addiction<\/em>. He wrote: \u201cThose who are\nestablished drinkers at age 50 are \u2018survivors\u2019 of their alcohol consumptions\nwho [initially] might have been healthier or have had safer drinking patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the new study, Naimi and his team analyzed the data from\nthe Center for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s Alcohol-Related Disease Impact Application.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In looking more closely at the data and accounting for age,\nthe researchers found two very different stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For people between ages 20 to 49:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 they accounted for 35.8% of alcohol-related deaths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Only 4.5% of deaths were prevented by alcohol consumption<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 had 58.4% of the total number of years lost to alcohol<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For people 65 and over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 they accounted for 35% of alcohol-related deaths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 A whopping 80% of deaths were prevented by alcohol\nconsumption<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 had 15% of the total number of years lost to alcohol<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the study\nconcludes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the authors, in the group they studied, the\nyounger people had an increased risk of dying from alcohol consumption as\nopposed to an increased risk from not drinking. But the opposite was true for\nthe older people.
