Here are things to know about the mineral and its essential functions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why you need it<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phosphorus serves two main purposes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To build and maintain strong teeth and bones<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To make proteins that grow and repair damaged cells and tissues<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the latter purpose, phosphorus also helps manage the body\u2019s energy use and storage, filter and remove waste from the kidneys, promote healthy nerves and aid in muscle recovery after exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How much you need<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the average adult needs about 700 mg per day of phosphorus, infants, toddlers, children and teens have different daily requirements. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> newborns to 6 months old \u2013 100 mg<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 7 months to 1 year \u2013 275 mg<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toddlers \u2013 1 to 3 years \u2013 460 mg<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> children \u2013 4 to 8 years \u2013 500 mg<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tweens and teens \u2013 9 years to 18 years \u2013 1250 mg<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who are nursing or pregnant don\u2019t need more phosphorus than average adults.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to get it<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When in doubt about which foods are rich in phosphorus, look for protein sources. Chicken, pork, turkey, nuts, seafood, seeds and low-fat dairy products tend to be high in phosphorus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phosphorus can also be found in foods with less protein than those listed above, such as broccoli, garlic, potatoes, dried fruit, and whole grains, but it\u2019s not absorbed by the body as easily as the high-protein foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Special considerations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the average person, it\u2019s hard to get too much phosphorus to the point that it would harm you. But people with kidney disease or those who have difficulty processing calcium need to be cautious, as too much phosphorus can be dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When excess phosphorus builds up in the blood, it can pull calcium away from the bones and form deposits in the soft tissues.
