But olive oil, coconut oil, lotions and baby oil aren’t safe options for a number of reasons. From damaging condoms and staining sheets to clogging pores and causing infections, these alternative lubricants for sex should be avoided.

So, what lubricants for sex are safe to use?

Silicone-based lubricants

Most of the pre-lubricated condoms on the market use silicone-based lubricant. That’s because silicone doesn’t damage latex and it lasts longer than water-based lubricants.

But silicone-based lubricants do have their downfall. First, they don’t react with water, so it’s hard to get the stains out of fabrics like bed sheets.

Second, they don’t absorb or drain from the vagina (or anus) immediately. This can cause bacteria to become trapped in the gel, increasing the risk of infection.

Water-based lubricants

Like silicone-based lubricants, the water-based versions don’t damage latex. They tend to dry out at a faster rate than oil-based lubes.

Reasons to use lubricant

Not using lubricants? You may want rethink that.

Even if you’re not experiencing uncomfortable friction during sex, your partner may. A lubricant will add moisture, reducing the chance of damaging the lining of the vagina or anus. This can not only be painful, but it can also increase the risk of infection.

While the vagina does produce some lubricant, the anus does not. But even with this natural production of moisture, the vagina can dry up. This could be due to one or more of the following:

smoking

chemotherapy

dehydration

perimenopause or menopause

medication side effects

some medical conditions

If for no other reason, consider using a lubricant to increase your partner’s comfort and sexual experience. You may even find that you prefer sex with lubricants.

You’ll choose your lubricant based on a number of factors: the type of condom you’re using, your preferred tastes and scents, and how good you are at getting stains out of your sheets!

If you run out of lubricants for sex, you may be tempted to reach for an alternative.
