{"id":14242,"date":"2019-09-02T13:17:37","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T13:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/squad\/?p=14242"},"modified":"2019-09-02T13:17:37","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T13:17:37","slug":"gout-increases-risk-of-kidney-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/gout\/gout-increases-risk-of-kidney-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Gout Increases Risk of Kidney Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Previous research has indicated that gout may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but a new study has determined just how much greater the risk is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusively linking gout to kidney failure<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In research published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BMJ Open<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, scientists looked at data from 68,897 adults with gout and 554,964 adults without gout. They followed both groups for 3.68 years, on average.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The study used the following guidelines to define advanced kidney disease:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first occurrence of \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2026 kidney function at less than 10% of normal<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2026 dialysis, transplant or end-stage kidney disease<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2026 a doubling of serum creatinine from the baseline levels<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2026 death associated with CKD<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even after controlling for factors like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, smoking, alcohol use and drugs that impact kidney function, the correlation between gout and kidney disease was shocking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe results were quite astonishing,\u201d says Professor Austin Stack from the University of Limerick. \u201cWe discovered that patients who suffered from gout had a 29% higher risk of advanced chronic kidney disease compared to those without gout.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was especially true for those with end stage kidney disease, which created a twofold higher risk for the link to gout.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTaken together,\u201d says Stack, \u201cthe findings from this study suggest that gout is an independent risk factor for progression of CKD and kidney failure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Limitations to the study<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The study was large, but still had some limitations.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, gout was only assessed by looking at a doctor\u2019s diagnosis or by the participant registering their use of urate-lowering treatments. But gout often goes undiagnosed, making it possible that some people were not counted among those with gout, even though they had it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, the study was observational, so it\u2019s possible that there could be an unmeasured variable that would otherwise affect the results.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regardless, there\u2019s enough information to encourage doctors to get gout under control in hopes of reducing the risk of CKD progression.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Previous research has indicated that gout may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but a new study has determined just how much greater the risk is.
