They asked questions about:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Erectile dysfunction over the past 6 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Age<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Income<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Employment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Marital status<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Education level<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> General health<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> BMI<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Alcohol consumption<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Other health issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Quality of care<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The men were also asked about work productivity, including absenteeism and working despite impairment from illness (\u201cwork presenteeism\u201d).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The results? Throughout all eight countries, erectile dysfunction affected 49.7% of the men.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The quality of life scores were lower for men with erectile dysfunction across all eight countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Controlling for other factors<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s important to point out that some of the above-mentioned variables also have the potential to reduce work productivity, so that had to be accounted for in the analysis.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, men with erectile dysfunction were more apt to be smokers, drinkers and obese, and less likely to exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAfter controlling for covariates, men with ED (vs. no ED) had significantly greater impairment in the U.S. (2.11 times as much overall work productivity impairment),\u201d explain the authors. \u201cAbsenteeism, presenteeism overall work productivity loss, and activity impairment were more than two-fold higher in men with ED than me with no ED.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Study limitations<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are some things to consider before assuming everything about this study is proof positive that ED causes a drop in work productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, this was a self-assessed questionnaire about ED, not a medical classification and diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Second, some of the men could be misreporting (intentionally or unintentionally) how much time they\u2019ve missed or taken off work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, this study was supported by Pfizer, the company that makes Viagra, so it has an invested interest in showing that ED is a big problem for men around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED) can be disheartening in its own right, but new researcher indicates that it may also reduce productivity at work.
