{"id":14271,"date":"2019-09-18T18:07:02","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T18:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/squad\/?p=14271"},"modified":"2019-09-18T18:07:02","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T18:07:02","slug":"what-is-ugly-cholesterol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/cholesterol\/what-is-ugly-cholesterol\/","title":{"rendered":"What is \u201cUgly Cholesterol\u201d?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men watching their cholesterol probably know about the \u201cgood\u201d and the \u201cbad,\u201d but what about the \u201cugly\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, there\u2019s something called \u201cugly cholesterol,\u201d and it\u2019s a term used to describe remnant particle cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The good, the bad and the ugly<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously, doctors were only focused on four things related to cholesterol:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> triglycerides<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> total cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But new Danish research has linked ugly cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, determining that all three types of cholesterol (good, bad and ugly) make up total cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur results show that the amount of remnant cholesterol in the blood of adult Danes is just as high as the amount of bad LDL cholesterol,\u201d explains Professor Borge Nordestgaard of the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital. \u201cWe have previously shown that remnant cholesterol is at least as critical as LDL cholesterol in relation to an increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and [this] is, therefore, a disturbing development.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reducing remnant cholesterol<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing that you should aim to reduce not only your LDL cholesterol but also your ugly cholesterol (and triglycerides), what should you do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, focus on eating more heart-healthy foods. These include things like fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and poultry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, cut out high-sugar foods and foods that are high in saturated fats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you smoke, do everything in your power to quit because it increases your risk of coronary heart disease if you have high cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find ways to be less sedentary (e.g., a walking desk rather than sitting all day at work) and incorporate more exercise into your lifestyle.
