{"id":14303,"date":"2019-09-25T23:59:33","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T23:59:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/squad\/?p=14303"},"modified":"2019-09-25T23:59:33","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T23:59:33","slug":"too-much-too-little-sleep-linked-to-heart-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/sleep\/too-much-too-little-sleep-linked-to-heart-attacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Too Much, Too Little Sleep Linked to Heart Attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an ideal amount of sleep if you\u2019re looking to reduce your risk of a heart attack, regardless of other heart risk factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Sleep and heart attacks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team of researchers from the United States and the UK recently looked at data from the UK biobank that included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> self-reporting on how much the person slept each night<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> health records for seven years<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> results of genetics tests<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientists found that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People who slept fewer than 6 hours per night had a 20% greater risk of a first heart attack (compared to people who slept 6-9 hours).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People who slept more than 9 hours had a 34% greater risk of a first heart attack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People with a high genetic liability for developing heart disease who slept 6-9 hours per night reduced the risk of having an initial heart attack by 18%.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk for heart attack was even greater when the person\u2019s sleep diverged greatly from the recommended 6 to 9 hours. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People who only got 5 hours of sleep had a 52% greater risk of a first heart attack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People who got more than 10 hours of sleep per night doubled their risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These results were found even after removing 30 factors that could potentially affect sleep and heart health, including things like income, education, smoking, mental health, body composition, and physical activity. This helped show that sleep duration is an independent risk factor for a heart attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tips for getting enough sleep<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re among the 1 in 3 Americans who don\u2019t get at least 7 hours of sleep each night, consider these tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Go to sleep and get out of bed at the same time every day, including weekends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Exercise regularly, but not right before bed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Get natural light during the day and make your room dark for sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Don\u2019t eat or drink right before bed.
