{"id":14447,"date":"2019-10-28T00:41:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T00:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/squad\/?p=14447"},"modified":"2019-10-28T00:41:24","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T00:41:24","slug":"obesity-poses-different-risks-for-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/weight-loss\/obesity-poses-different-risks-for-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Obesity Poses Different Risks for Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although obesity poses increased health risks for both men and women, your sex may predispose you to different obesity-related conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Analyzing the data<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Researchers from the University of Oxford wanted to explore sex-specific relationships and obesity to determine how men and women are affected differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team analyzed data from 228,466 women and 195,041 men and looked at:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> genetic information<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> body mass index<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> waist-hip ratio<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> waist-hip ratio adjusted for BMI<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How obesity affects men<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The scientists confirmed that obesity can increase health conditions for both men and women, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> type 1 and type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> coronary artery disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> lung cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> kidney failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> chronic liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> nonalcoholic fatty liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGiven the compelling evidence of harm that arises as a consequence of obesity across a broad range of diseases that result in death,\u201d says study co-author Dr. Michael Holmes, \u201cour findings highlight the critical need for public health measures to stem the tide of obesity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But when comparing the data from men and women, they found that each sex had a higher risk for certain health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For women who were obese, there was a greater risk of type 1 diabetes (compared to men).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For men who were obese, there was a greater risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease AND chronic kidney disease (compared to women).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis study shows just how harmful carrying excess weight can be to human health, and that women and men may experience different diseases as a result,\u201d explains Dr. Jenny Censin, first author of the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The study was published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PLOS Genetics.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Obesity in the United States<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the CDC, obesity affected 93.3 million adults in the 2015-2016 timeframe.
