{"id":14570,"date":"2019-12-10T01:17:24","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T01:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/squad\/?p=14570"},"modified":"2019-12-10T01:17:24","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T01:17:24","slug":"eating-to-match-biological-clock-may-help-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.healthymale.com\/blog\/diabetes\/eating-to-match-biological-clock-may-help-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating to Match Biological Clock May Help Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New research has found that, for people with diabetes, eating to match your biological clock may be more beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Standard diabetes advice<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s common for doctors to advice type 2 diabetes to eat smaller, more frequent meals at regular intervals; up to six times per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But this approach has been known to cause problems, especially for those with severe forms of diabetes who need to inject insulin. This high-dosage insulin injection can create glucose imbalances and lead to weight gain. For people who aren\u2019t underweight, gaining weight can lead to a greater risk of cardiovascular problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>The new advice for diabetes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A research team from Tel Aviv University wanted to see if eating a diet that matches your natural body clock could help reduce the amount of insulin diabetics need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They split volunteers (all of whom had type 2 diabetes) into two groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Group 1 ate the standard six meals a day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Group 2 ate three meals a day: an early breakfast with bread, fruit and sweets; a sizeable lunch; and a small meal at dinner that contains no fruit, sweets or starchy foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They took a variety of measurements from both participants, including appetite, weight, blood sugar control and body clock gene expression at:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> baseline (before the study)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 2 weeks after the study started<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 12 weeks after the trial<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They found that group 1 neither lost weight or saw better blood sugar control, but group 2 experienced both benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTheir need for diabetic medication, especially for insulin doses, dipped substantially,\u201d explains Professor Daniela Jakubowicz. \u201cSome were even able to stop using insulin altogether. In addition, the [three meal diet] improved the expression of biological clock genes. This suggests that the \u2026 diet is not only more effective in controlling diabetes.
