According to new research, yes. In fact, the new study found that melodic alarms may actually be the key to keeping you alert after you wake up from sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How you wake from sleep matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The lead author of the study, Stuart McFarlane, says that how awake we feel after our alarm goes off influences how efficiently we do tasks later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t wake properly, your work performance can be degraded for periods up to 4 hours, and that has been linked to major accidents,\u201d says McFarlane. \u201cYou would assume that a startling \u2018beep beep beep\u2019 alarm would improve alertness, but our data revealed that melodic alarms might be the key element. This was unexpected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How melodic alarms may help<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As is explained in the study paper published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PLOS One<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the researchers used self-reporting from 50 participants to determine their type of alarm clock and to measure sleep inertia, which is defined as \u201cthe transitional state between sleep and wake, marked by impaired performance, reduced vigilance and a desire to return to sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although the researchers didn\u2019t find a correlation between the sound of the person\u2019s alarm clock and ACTUAL sleep inertia, there was a significant association between the sound of the alarm and the person\u2019s PERCEIVED sleep inertia.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why does this matter?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For people who need to be suddenly responsive\u2014such as emergency room doctors\u2014it could be helpful to use melodic alarms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese findings are particularly important for people who might work in dangerous situations shortly after waking, like firefighters or pilots, but also for anyone who has to be rapidly alert, such as someone driving to the hospital in an emergency,\u201d explains McFarlane.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why would the alarm\u2019s sound matter?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The scientists believe that harsh alarms may confuse the brain activity while waking.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can waking from sleep to the sound of a particular alarm affect the rest of your day?
