Insulin controls the glucose in your blood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cells ignore the hormone, glucose does not enter the cells as it should do normally and accumulates in the blood. This can cause type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are you at risk?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be at risk if you fit in one or more of these categories:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A waist measurement of 40 inches or more<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low HDL levels (below 40)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoker<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sedentary lifestyle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triglycerides levels 150 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mg\/dL<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or higher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A family history of diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethnicities at a higher risk include Asian American, Hispanic, African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, and Pacific Islander American\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>See your doctor for tests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your medical provider will run blood tests to check for prediabetes. If your results fall within these levels, your provider will discuss your next steps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An A1C (glycated hemoglobin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 5.7 to 6.4 percent, an FPG test (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fasting plasma glucose)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 100 to 125 mg\/dL, or an OGTT (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral glucose tolerance test)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 140 to 199 mg\/dL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u00a04 key measures to prevent prediabetes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. <strong>Exercise<\/strong>. You know it is a must. Now it\u2019s time to do it. Get up and move that strong body!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. <strong>Eat healthy food<\/strong>. Cut back on processed foods, white bread, fast food, and sweets like cookies, ice cream, and candy. Add colorful fruits and veggies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. <strong>Lose weight<\/strong>. Ten pounds may be the start to get you on track. Ask your doctor for support.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. <strong>Get more sleep<\/strong>. Reduce late-night technology use and make a comfortable bed. Don\u2019t drink a lot of fluids or eat a heavy meal before bedtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that your medical provider has the facts you need.
