Why Aren’t Young People Dating?

Many of the older generations are shaking their heads at their grandchildren’s lack of interest in dating. They don’t understand it because it was once normal for those 17 years old to get married right out of high school.

While most don’t think that is such a good idea today, it still seems odd to older people why young people don’t seem to want to date. Here are three reasons.

They are focused on themselves

This is the number one reason the younger generation isn’t involved in relationships. That doesn’t mean they aren’t dating. However, most opt out of a boyfriend-girlfriend scenario to focus on getting an education,
starting a career, and developing inwardly.

They are too tech-focused

Dating may not be on a high list of priorities but communicating through technology is. Younger people still use dating apps to find others to go out with. In fact, more than half of single, younger people are on a dating site or use an app. They text, email, and use social media to communicate. They just don’t see a need to take that to a more intimate, in-person level.

Yet, more than half of surveys said they find the people they date through social media.

They don’t have marriage skills

A couple of studies suggest that younger people don’t have the social or maturity skills necessary to maintain long-term relationships like marriage. Dating was once pursued to find marriage. Now, young people just “hook up” so dating isn’t necessary.

Younger people are also confused about the definition of love, why marriage is a good thing, and true
intimacy. They don’t want what they don’t understand.

Conclusion

The younger generation has its way of pursuing relationships but it isn’t necessarily the best way because it lacks things like emotional intimacy and trust. It’s up to the older generation concerned about the trend to
invest time in teaching the younger ones why these things are important to their future to encourage dating.
