Proper Hat Etiquette for Men

Wearing a hat doesn’t require any etiquette tips, does it? Actually, it does. The rules may be a little less restrictive than, say, 50 years ago, but some still apply. Here’s what you need to know.

Where can I wear a hat?

As a general rule of thumb, you can wear a hat anytime you’re outside. You can also wear them in most indoor public places, including airports, on public transportation, in hotel lobbies and elevators and in long indoor corridors.

Where can’t I wear a hat?

If you’re serious about etiquette, you should remove your hat at in church, in schools, in theaters and in anyone’s home other than your own. It’s also polite to remove your hat while frequenting a business.

Are there special circumstances?

If you want to be old-school polite, take off your hat when you’re in the presence of a woman, during meals, when being introduced to someone and during movies. It’s also not appropriate to wear a hat during a wedding, funeral or other formal service, especially the national anthem. In addition, you should remove your hat when having your photo taken.

Other considerations

If you’re looking for to follow true etiquette for hats, you’ll want to follow these guidelines:

  • Removing your hat to greet someone or introduce yourself? You can simply lift it off your head for a moment to be polite. Nod and smile at the person before returning your hat to its position.
  • If you completely remove your hat, hold it in a way that doesn’t show the inner lining.
  • Go old school and simply tip your hat by the brim and tug it slightly. It’s not as formal as completely removing your hat, but it’s a cowboy-like way to remain polite.
  • Wearing something on your hat, such as a pin or feather? Keep it on the left side. (Ornamentation goes on the right side of the hat for women.)
