4 Weight Loss Myths That Men Over 40 Tend to Believe

If you’re over 40 and trying to drop a few pounds, you’ve probably heard a few myths about it. These myths tend to be discouraging, which is why we’re here to set the record straight.

Here are four myths that simply aren’t true:

Myth #1: Counting calories is the only way to lose weight

While counting calories can be a helpful tool in your weight loss journey, it’s certainly not the only way to shed some pounds. Some men don’t want to count calories because it’s tedious and restricting.

Instead of counting calories, consider keeping a food journal. By writing down what you eat, you can identify some problem foods that you can eliminate to drop some weight.

Myth #2: Carbs keep you from losing weight

There are plenty of diets that limit the number of carbs you eat, and while some work, you don’t have to eliminate carbs to get fit.

However, you should eat carbs that are high in protein or fiber, like brown rice, oatmeal, dried beans, yogurt, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

Myth #3: Weight loss after 40 is next to impossible

Yikes, talk about a discoursing statement. Fortunately, this is a myth. Yes, metabolism does decrease with age. The American Council on Exercise says your body burns 150 calories less every decade past 20, but that doesn’t mean weight loss is impossible.

If you burn more calories than you eat, you can lose weight – no matter how old you are.

Myth #4: Switch to diet soda for optimum weight loss

If you’re a soda drinker, you might assume that switching to a diet version will help you lose weight. While it’s true that diet sodas have fewer calories, they aren’t necessarily ideal for weight loss. Instead of switching to diet soda, consider switching to water.
