Ask Delish magazine what the hot food trends are for 2019 and you might expect to get a bunch of kale smoothies and kiwi-infused seafood dishes. But this year’s list actually holds a lot of promise for us “normal” folks. Check out six of our favorite up-and-coming food (and drink) trends:
1. Milkshake IPAs
Brewed with lactose, milkshake IPAs are like root beer floats with alcohol. They’re made with India Pale Ale and come with flavors like vanilla and peach. There are also smoothie beers!
2. Mainstream Vegan Burgers
No longer relegated to all-vegan restaurants, plant-based burgers are showing up on the menu at TGI Fridays and even White Castle.
3. Breakfast Cups
From oatmeal to scrambled eggs with sausage, breakfast cups on bigger than ever in terms of taking the most important meal of the day on the go. Wild Friends has a whole line of oats and nut butter, including almond cashew oats, peanut cashew oats, almond cranberry oats and peanut blueberry. All contain nut butter that makes the oatmeal creamy and full of protein.
4. Oat Milk
Not a fan of soy milk or almond milk? Try non-dairy oat milk. It’s high in carb and low in protein, but if you can’t do lactose, it’s worth a try.
5. Za’atar
This spice mix of Middle Eastern decent includes oregano, salt, sumac, thyme and ground sesame seeds. You’ll see Za’atar more on menu item descriptions and sold on shelves as a sprinkle or drizzle to top things like chicken, rice and other grain bowls.
6. CBD-infused Everything
Although it’s made from either hemp or marijuana, Cannabidiol (CBD) doesn’t get you high because it contains little to no THC. But CBD has gained popularity for its ability to fight anxiety, insomnia and pain due to inflammation and it’s popping up in all kinds of products. Try the CBD-infused coffee, gummy bear and lollipops. A brand called Recess has released three flavors of CBD-infused sparkling water: Peach Ginger, Blackberry Chai and Pomegranate Hibiscus.
