After Exercise, This Supplement May Help Burn More Fat

Although exercise alone is a great way to burn fat, new research seems to point to the idea that a supplement called inulin-propionate ester (IPE) can strengthen that effect long after you’re done working out.

Studying the supplement

A study published in the journal Metabolism looked at the appetite suppressant IPE, which is produced by gut bacteria. Because there is already so much interest in how gut microbiota affects our health, weight and well-being, researchers wanted to know if IPE could enhance weight loss after moderate exercise—even without changing anything related to diet.

For the research, the team recruited 20 women with a BMI over 25. All the women were between 25 and 45 years old and half the volunteers were given a placebo while the other half received a supplement of IPE. They were told not to change their eating habits during the 4-week trial.

The scientists measured resting fat oxidation levels before and after the trial by collecting them before breakfast, after breakfast and after lunch.

Although the group taking the placebo showed no changes to their fax oxidation after the 4 weeks, the women taking the IPE showed “a significant increase in the burning of fat at rest,” even 7 hours after taking the IPE.

 Caveats

It’s important to note that the study had some limitations. Firstly, the volunteers were all women. More tests need to be done using male participants. Secondly, all the women were 25-45. The results may be different if done with younger or older volunteers. Finally, this was a small trial, with only 20 people, and it only took place over 4 weeks.

Previous research

Other studies have shown that IPE supplements increased the rate at which the body burns fat while at rest and that IPE suppresses the cravings for high-calorie foods. In fact, one study found that despite being offered endless pasta, people who took the IPE ended up eating 10% less than they normally would.
