10 Staples of Timeless Fashion

It’s tempting to follow fashion trends and think, “I can pull off that new look!” But if you want to spend the least amount of money to get a bang for your buck, stick to the wardrobe staples that will stand the test of time. That means skipping the bright colors and crazy patterns and investing your money in pieces that will continue to work for you through the years. Here are a few we recommend.

1. Three classic collared shirts

Dependable colors that will go with almost anything include white, light gray and light blue. You can add other colors and a few with pinstripes or checkers, but if you only have the money to invest in three quality shirts, start with these colors.

2. White t-shirts.

These can be worn alone, under a collared shirt or with blazers, so spend the money to get some long-lasting t-shirts with v-necks and crew collars that you can’t see through or that won’t fall apart after a few washes.

3. A good pair of medium to dark jeans.

Skip the faded (or acid-washed)jeans and opt for a solid blue medium or dark denim, which will work for years to come. Wear them with dress shoes on casual day or sneakers for the weekend or boots for a nice weekend dinner.

4. Two pairs of dress slacks.

A pair of khakis and a pair of navy blue will go a long way to up your fashion.

5. A well-fitting suit.

Choose a neutral color like dark blue.

6. A tailored jacket.

A nice jacket goes with slacks, jeans or cords.

7. Three good pairs of dress shoes.

Find a simple pair of black dress shoes that you can wear with a suit or slacks, a pair of brown dress shoes that can work with a more casual outfit and a pair of dress or casual boots to go with jeans, cords or khakis.

8. A brown and black belt.

Yes, you need two because they have to match your shoes, as per fashion rules.

9. Dress socks.

Get socks to match every pair of pants you have: black, navy, gray, tan, brown. You can ask for silly dress socks—that pair with sailboats you’ve had your eye on—for your birthday.

10. A warm, well-fitting winter coat.

Don’t skimp. Make sure it fits over your bulkiest outfit and that you can freely move your arms to walk, open doors and carry things.

You’ll also want to invest in a nice watch, a few ties and a good bag or briefcase.
