How to Dress for a Semi-formal Event

Somewhere between jeans and a suit is the ever-confusing semi-formal attire. While it can be exciting to get an invitation to event where you get to dress up a little, it can also leave men scratching their heads as to what to wear. Here are some guidelines to help you dress appropriately.

Understanding semi-formal dress

As a general rule, semi-formal refers to “sophisticated by more relaxed than black tie.” The term generally applies to evening events and weddings where you’re not required to wear a tux. Sometimes, the invitation will offer specifics on what to wear. When your only reference is “semi-formal attire,” think suit and tie to be safe.

Weighing in season, time of day and other factors

Of course, there are many different types of suits, so you’ll need to factor in things like the time of day the event is being held, the season and perhaps even what the bridal party is wearing, if you’re just a guest. You don’t want to show up in a navy suit, pink shirt and striped navy tie if that’s what the groomsmen are wearing!

For daytime events, a beige or light gray suit will work well. Darker shades, such as navy, brown or dark gray work best at night, although the suit’s fabric will also come into play. You can pull off a navy linen jacket in summer, but winter will require a heartier fabric. Black is usually reserved for the most formal events.

If you’re quite sure of what’s appropriate, you can skip the tie and just wear a nice dress shirt. The same goes for a matching suit. A nice pair of tailored pants and well-fitted blazer can look great, as long as you look polished and not throw together.

Accessories

Dress shoes, such as Oxfords or derby shoes, are classic staples. Avoid loafers, monk strap shoes or casual boots, which will make you look unfinished and less sophisticated with dress slacks. Your belt should match the color of your shoes.

A nice watch can be a statement piece, as can pocket squares.

Ties should be tasteful and classic, though certain events will allow for something more playful. If you’re going to a nonprofit fundraiser for an animal shelter, for example, wearing a tie with dogs on it can be a fun and fierce fashion statement!
