Wearing the Right Clothes for Winter Runs

Runners don’t let cold weather hold them back. Yet, extreme temperatures can change the way you run.

One of the big changes is how you dress for your run.

Some runners give this a lot of consideration as you want to be comfortable and not be bogged down by clothes.

You may get hot during your run but want to stay warm.

Running experts say the most attention needs to be given to your outer layer of clothing.

What to Wear

A jacket is a smart, versatile choice for an outer layer and most suggest getting one that is breathable but insulated.

Look for a fitted running jacket that is also water and wind-resistant with reflective features.

Heat-capturing tights are another good investment, especially if you live in extreme climates.

These are made from engineered fabric and may have a fleece lining that wipes away sweat but keeps your legs warm and dry.

Base layering should always keep moisture away from your body. Stay away from cotton because it takes in moisture and will make you colder.

Most recommend a lightweight shirt with a high neckline.

An insulating layer will keep you warm. Fabrics to look for include wool or fleece.

Be sure what you choose allows you to move freely in a full range of motion.

You can get a hoodie that can cover multiple layers of clothes.

The Little Details

Socks need to be the type that absorbs sweat and most say wool socks are the best.

They also need a padded sole and be able to keep feet dry from inclement weather.

Hats and gloves are also a must for winter running.

Hats should cover both your ears and head covered and be made of a sweat-resistant fabric that is also breathable.

Running experts say to pick a hot color for visibility.

Gloves should have a snug fit and the best have touchscreen-compatible fingertips in case you need to use your phone.

Having the right clothes to keep you comfortable and dry during your runs will eliminate one excuse for
foregoing the run for the couch on a cold day.

It will also lower your risk of getting sick from things like colds and other weather-related illnesses.
