How to Temporarily Cover a Tattoo

Need to cover a tattoo for a big job interview of first date? We’ve got some tips to help you hide the evidence!

1. Purchase a product made specifically for covering tattoos.

They’ve got plenty of coverage (compared to a typical foundation you’ll find in the makeup section) and come in a variety of skin tones so you can get a near-perfect match. They’re a bit pricey, but worth it if it can land you your dream job (or dream woman).

If you have sensitive skin, look for one that’s hypoallergenic. Also, be sure to read the description to see how soon you’ll need to reapply it. Some last for up to 16 hours. A few of the top brands also claim to be waterproof, which is great if you plan to go to the beach on your date, swim in a pool or just sweat a lot at your interview.

2. Try stage makeup.

If you can find it in your skin tone, use the white makeup to cover the tattoo and then apply regular foundation on top of that to match your coloring.

3. Use regular makeup.

If you can’t find tattoo-cover makeup or stage makeup, or you can’t get it delivered on time, your last resort can be regular makeup.

Start by washing your skin thoroughly in order to best prepare it to receive the makeup. Then apply a concealer that several shades lighter than your skin color or use a color-correcting concealer (some are even green). Don’t rub the concealer; blot it with a makeup sponge.

Next, apply a foundation that matches your skin tone with a makeup sponge (or spray if you can find a spray foundation). Again, blot the foundation, don’t rub.

Using a large brush, apply a translucent powder over the foundation.

Finally, spritz the area with a setting spray to keep the makeup from rubbing off on your clothes. Ensure the area is dry before you touch it or get dressed.

Full disclosure: Your tattoo needs to be fully healed before you apply makeup. If you try to cover a fresh tattoo, you could ruin the ink or worse—develop an infection.
