3 Snacks to Keep Your Diabetes Controlled

Cookies, soda, bagels, and cake are all highly processed foods that can increase your blood sugar levels when you are hanging out with friends.  But what are you going to snack on when everyone else is chowing on the hero sandwich? Men with type 1 or type 2 diabetes need to choose wisely to maintain their blood sugar level. So what can you eat and be satisfied?

You are not alone in this snack conundrum. The CDC’s 2017 National Diabetes Statistics Report states: “There are 30.3 million people in the United States with diabetes. That’s close to 1 in 10 people. Among all these people living with diabetes, 90 to 95 percent have type 2 diabetes.”

Avoid these food and drinks:

  • Soda, teas and fruit drinks that are made with sugar
  • White bread on sandwiches
  • Pasta
  • Cake, donuts, cookies, pies, bagels
  • Sugary cereals

1. Game time snack table

For game time, set up your snack area with a small dish of nuts and a plate of carrots with a container of low carb cream cheese dip. A few strips of bacon will please the meat lovers in your house. Then add a plate of almond poppy seed crackers topped with some cheddar or swiss cheese. For dessert, top strawberries with whipped cream. Drink coffee or diet soda.

2. Hiking treats

For an invigorating outside hike, pack  crunchy apples, a cheese stick, a hard boiled egg, or beef jerky. Take along fresh water to stay hydrated.

3. Game night meal

If you need something more substantial, a whole wheat sandwich with turkey, mustard and lettuce will do the trick. Create a scrumptious pizza by using a low carb tortilla topped with cheese, onions, a few olives and broil to perfeciton. Add a diet/sugar free soda to drink.

Don’t just grab junk food. Plan some low carb snacks to stay healthy.
