Doctor taking blood sugar levels

What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes Mellitus is a disorder in which your body does not respond normally or does not produce enough
insulin, which causes blood sugar or glucose levels to spike.

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that causes increased urination and thirst.

It also makes people lose weight without trying and damages the nerves, causing problems with sensation.

Other symptoms include damaged blood vessels, which increase the risk of heart attack, chronic kidney
disease, vision loss, and stroke.

This deadly disease can be very fatal when not managed properly.

If you have ever been diagnosed with this disease, you will need to follow a strict diet that is low in carbs,
sugar, and saturated fat.

Blood Sugar and Insulin

When your body does not produce enough insulin or when your cells do not respond to insulin the way they should, this is a clear sign of diabetes mellitus.

There are three types of diabetes; type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes, which is most common in pregnant women.

Type 1 diabetes

This type is an autoimmune disease, which means that your body is attacking itself.

If you have type 1 diabetes, the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas are being destroyed.

However, type 1 diabetes is not the most common as only 10% of all patients with diabetes have type 1.

Type 2 diabetes

This type of diabetes is the most common.

This diabetes mellitus is where your body does not respond to insulin or does not produce enough to regulate your blood sugar levels.

There is also prediabetes, which is the stage before type 2. Prediabetes is when your blood sugar levels are high, but not high enough for you to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes

This type of diabetes is only common in pregnant women.

It develops during pregnancy but usually goes away after pregnancy.

However, if a woman ever had gestational diabetes, the risk of getting type 2 diabetes is higher.
