Always Tired? Try These Foods

Coffee might help you feel less tired temporarily, but there are plenty of nutrient-rich foods that can fight fatigue as well. Here are some of the best items to reach for if you’re looking to fight that tired feeling throughout the day.

  1. Watermelon

It makes sense that a food that is 92% water would help you stay hydrated and, in turn, help you fight dehydration-induced fatigue. In addition, watermelon is rich in vitamins C and A and other nutrients.

  1. Spinach

This leafy green vegetable is very rich in iron, vitamin K and magnesium and can fight fatigue. Just add some to a salad, quiche, soup or sandwich.

  1. Chia seeds

With protein, fat and fiber, chia seeds can help prevent your blood sugar from spiking, which is a common cause of fatigue. Add to yogurt, oatmeal or smoothies or sprinkle them on a salad for a nice crunch.

  1. Kale

Like spinach, this leafy green vegetable is full of antioxidants, vitamins and iron. People who are iron deficient often feel fatigued but the iron in kale can help carry oxygen throughout the body to give cells a source of energy.

  1. Oats

With lots of complex carbs and fiber, oats provide an easy-to-convert long-term energy source. Look for plain whole oats over sweetened oatmeal that may contain added sugars, preservatives and sodium.

  1. Almonds

Few on-the-go snacks are as healthy as whole almonds. They’re rich in fiber, protein and fats and help you feel full to provide extended energy. Almonds also have plenty of magnesium and vitamin E.

When in doubt, reach for whole foods straight from nature. In general, the more processed the foods, the less they’ll help you fight fatigue. Skip baked goods, energy drinks, sugar foods, potato chips and white bread. A cup of coffee is ok, but if you find yourself reach for caffeinated beverages to stay awake, try adding some of the above foods to your diet instead.
