The Pros and Cons of Taking Paxil for Depression

Paxil, the brand name for paroxetine, is a common anti-depressant pill that’s also used to treat OCD, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. As with any pill, there are pros and cons.

The benefits of Paxil

Available in immediate-release and extended-release prescription forms, it can be taken as part of a combination therapy with other medications.

Paxil falls under the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin your body produces. Your dosage depends on several factors, such as how severe your condition is, your age, other medications you take and which conditions you’re being treated for.

For most people taking it for depression, anxiety, OCD or PTSD, Paxil can improve your mood, decrease your feelings of compulsions and obsessions, decrease your anxiety and panic and decrease nightmares and flashbacks.

Women taking Paxil for premenstrual dysphoric disorder may experience decreased mood swings, anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability and tiredness.

The side effects 

Most of the side effects associated with Paxil aren’t life-threatening. They include nausea and dizziness weakness, sleepiness, sweating, decreased appetite, constipation, dry mouth and yawning. Some men may experience impotence, delayed ejaculation or a decreased interest in sex.

If these side effects are severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor.

Although it’s rare, some people do experience more serious side effects, such as worsening of mood, hallucinations, muscle twitching, racing heartbeat, vomiting, high or low blood pressure, eye problems, seizures, abnormal bleeding, headaches or bone fractures.

Drugs to avoid when taking it

There are a few drugs that can cause dangerous issues when combined with Paxil or the generic version, paroxetine. Don’t take it if you’re taking Thioridazine, Pimozide, MAO inhibitors, Tryptophan (which is found in dietary supplements). Linezolid and intravenous methylene blue.
