Why Don’t Men Talk About Mental Health?

Usually, men only talk about things like their job, hobbies, their family and other topics except for mental health.

Americans continue to experience mental health difficulties. It might not be a problem talking about mental health for women, but how come some men don’t dare to go near the topic?

Let’s find out why:

Why men don’t talk about mental health with other men

According to research, the reasons why men don’t talk about mental health are because:

  • Some men learned to deal with it and keep it inside.
  • Some men have no one they can trust that much to raise topics like their own mental health.
  • They don’t want to burden anyone with their problems.
  • They are too embarrassed to talk about something so sensitive to them.
  • They don’t like to admit that they need help or support.
  • They do not want to appear weak to other people, especially other men.
  • Mental health has always had a negative stigma.

Another research states that 77% of all suicides happened to men, which is probably connected and a result of men not talking about mental health.

Who do men talk to about their mental health?

Well, it is impossible for some people dealing with mental health problems not to talk to anyone.

Although some men don’t like to talk about it, they will have to talk about it with someone to reduce anxiety, stress, and the possibility of self-harm and depression.

If a man needs to talk to someone about mental health, they usually only talk to their closest friends, a family member, or a medical professional.

If that is the case, and you know someone who you think needs to talk about their mental health, talk to them.

However, if you are the one who needs to talk to someone, do not hesitate to go to a professional or open up to someone you are comfortable talking to about anything.
