Forty and Thriving: How to Survive Crossfit over 40

If you are interested in training for strength and conditioning, then Crossfit is for you. Created in 2000, Crossfit combines everyday activities like pulling, pushing and lifting into one high intensity workout. Featuring burpee box jumps, squats, and the running sandwich, Crossfit will definitely get your heart pumping. And if you are starting these workouts after 40, you might also be questioning your sanity. One’s body automatically slows down as it ages, and the high intensity workouts of Crossfit might make you nervous. But you will thrive if you follow these quick tips!

1. Be humble

Crossfit offers you a workout like none you have ever experienced, even if you are a marathon runner or mountain climber. Be willing to start fresh and learn the ropes with humility. Let the teachers correct your form so you get the most from lifting the weights. Watch others in the class to understand the process, even if they are younger than you. Learning the right way to do the moves will benefit you in the long run.

2. Embrace the HIIT

High intensity workouts can actually be better for aging bodies. Because testosterone decreases as you age, if you go for shorter intense bursts in your workouts, you are actually more in tune to what your body is going through.

3. Trust your body

At 40, you are more likely to listen to your body, and you need to! At this age there may be some tweaks and twinges from doing certain exercises, and you need to respect those issues.

4. Keep moving

Even if you want to crawl on the couch and never move again after the intense workout, keep moving after. Walking around, and going about your daily routine is a great way to keep your muscles stretched out and your body limber. This kind of workout routine can really make you sore. Try to prevent that by continued muscle action after.

Age is not an obstacle to getting fit. You are never too old to make your body as healthy as it can be. With a little ingenuity and ibuprofen, the sky’s the limit!
