Choosing a Winter Dress Coat

You need a dress coat for winter but you’re not sure what type is right for your style or body type. Consider these tips when comparing pieces to find the best match for your look and lifestyle.

Try the coat on over layers.

In winter, you’ll be wearing your coat over a shirt and sweater, a suit or other layers. If you try on the coat over nothing more than a t-shirt, chances are it will be too tight with a full outfit underneath.

Choose neutral colors.

Opt for conservative shades that go with anything, such as navy, gray, black or camel.

Find a coat that fits your style, size and shape.

If you need something quite formal for most days, look for a double-breasted coat. If you’re short in stature, this may not be the ideal coat for you, but you can pull it off if it’s tailored well. Can you survive on just a casual winter coat? Consider a duffle. Originally crafted to be worn by the military, these hooded coats often have wood or horn toggles that are fed through rope loops. Duffles fall above well above the knee, so they work well if you’re thick around the middle. You’ll often see duffles in blue, green or camel. Not sure what to get? You can’t go wrong with a long coat that falls mid-calf. They look good whether you’re dressed up or down and can keep you warm on the coldest of winter days!

Go simple if you go bold.

Thinking about investing in a bright color, a check or other patterns? Then choose a single-breasted overcoat, the simplest style of coat. Easy to wear and flattering on all body shapes and sizes, the single-breasted coat pairs well with slim-fitting trousers.

Have a professional help you choose.

Don’t be embarrassed to accept the help of that employee who seems to know his stuff. This is one of the times that being a know-it-all is a GOOD thing!
