Could Infertility Be Caused By Diet?

Couples who have tried to get pregnant for a while without success feel doomed. Doctors push things like IVF (in vitro fertilization) and IUI (intrauterine insemination). Yet, getting pregnant may be as simple as changing your diet.

The Case of Chickens

Everyone has been affected by the egg shortage. While agricultural experts insist it’s the result of avian flu, some chicken farmers say they believe the problem is in the feed. Those who switched from a mass-produced chicken feed to a locally produced brand saw dramatic increases in eggs from hens that previously laid few.

Holistic practitioners have long believed that processed foods, fast foods, and mass-produced foods cause many health problems including infertility. Many point to dropping fertility rates since 1970 when more people began eating processed food.

Women in their 20s back then had higher birth rates. Figures show there were 168 births per 1,000 women ages 20 to 24. Older women, ages 30 to 34, had 73 births per 1,000 women. Today, the birth rate averages at 70.77 births per 1,000 women across all age groups. Essentially, birth rates have halved over the past 40 to 50 years.

Foods That Help Fertility

Organic food is known to be generally healthier than non-organic food so that is worth trying. Drinking whole milk is better for women because of the fat in it as is using real butter, according to a 2007 fertility study. However, low-fat milk tends to help men with fertility.

Couples trying to get pregnant should consume more monounsaturated fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Changing your cooking oil to something like olive oil may help too.

Studies have shown some foods lower fertility chances. Those include red meat, processed foods, sugar or sugary drinks, and bread products.

Conclusion

As a couple, you may feel your infertility is out of your control. That is true to some degree. Even so, you can do some things to make your chances of getting pregnant more likely. One of the simplest things to do is change your diet. At the very least, you will be healthier when you do get pregnant.
