When Pets Are a Dealbreaker

Pets are highly important to people today. The pet industry is worth $222.93 billion so it’s clear that people will spend money on their furry friends. Anyone who spends money on pets will consider them in their dating life.

A pet who doesn’t like you is a dealbreaker for most people.

What pet owners say

Sixty-seven of those in relationship surveys said they couldn’t be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t like their pet.

Those who are single and not in a relationship are even more adamant. Surveys said 97% of them wouldn’t date a person who didn’t like their pet. Surveys skew toward women with 76% of women saying they are more attached to their pets than a man while 57% of men said that pet dislike from a woman is a dealbreaker.

Pets and relationships

It makes practical sense to discuss pets and how to deal with them if the relationship gets serious. Most
couples, totaling 61%, share pet care responsibilities like walking and feeding.

However, one person tends to do more than the other as the primary pet owner.

Sixty-nine percent of pet owner couples allow a pet to sleep with them in their bed. That number jumps for single people to 79%. Whether or not a pet should sleep in the bed is a discussion you should have if you get serious.

Those who are willing to accept pets belonging to their significant other must also accept the cost of
boarding while on vacation, shots, and other expenses.

How to woo a pet

Most people believe pets have a sixth sense about people and pet owners pay close attention to their pet’s behavior around their dates. Carry some treats with you to win the pet over.

Conclusion

Dating someone with pets can get complicated but it doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker. Understand that pets are an important part of a person’s life and you can’t force them to choose. The better action is to get to know the pet and learn to love it too.
