5 Valuable Hygiene Practices for Your Penis

Keeping your genitals clean is of the utmost importance. You want to stay fresh for sex, but you want to protect your health too.

Smell for Crotch Odors

It’s common for your genital area to sweat, so if your crotch smells, don’t stress. If you have a foul odor arising from your manhood, watch for yeast or urinary tract infections, or balanitis. A National Institute of Health book states, “Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis (head of the penis); it is fairly common and affects approximately 3-11% of males during their lifetime.”

Wash Your Penis

Washing your penis every day is not rocket science.

  • Use warm water with mild soap.
  • Do not scrub. This leads to irritation.
  • Pull back the foreskin and wash to prevent smegma buildup. Bacteria grow well in  smegma!
  • Wash between your anus and testicles. Bacteria like it there too.
  • Check for signs of lesions or blisters which could be an STI.

Itching Needs Attention

Redness, itching, and cracked skin can make your life miserable. The itching doesn’t mean you have an STI. You could have eczema from laundry detergent or your condom Thrush can be caused by a yeast infection. Your medications can cause an allergy. If the symptoms continue, call your medical provider.

Groom Your Pubic Hair

Do you let your pubic hair grow wild or are you a close-clipped man? A quick trim with scissors will make your hair look nice and neat. If you decide to shave, use shaving cream and a clean razor. Be wary of using chemicals as they can irritate penile skin.

Check Your Testicles

Wash your testicles by lifting your balls. Feel each testicle for lumps, bumps, or any changes. If anything is suspicious, contact your medical provider.

Bottom line: Keep your groin clean to keep yourself healthy.
