Do You Know The Effects of Abstaining From Sex?

So, you’ve decided to abstain from sex. Good for you! According to a 2017 study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, both men and women who chose to abstain from sex report very similar happiness levels compared to their sexually active counterparts. While most men are unlikely to notice any negative physical side effects on their health, there are some benefits to abstaining from sex by choice.

The Health Benefits of Abstinence

Although sex is a great way to relieve stress, much of the same can be achieved through masturbation. Men who choose masturbation instead of sex may find the following benefits:

  • No risk or worry about sexually transmitted infections.
  • No fear that you won’t be able to get or keep an erection.
  • No fear that you won’t be able to satisfy your partner.
  • Comfort that you are living consistently with your religious beliefs (if applicable).
  • No worry that you will hurt someone’s feelings by engaging in sex without delving into a relationship.
  • No risk or fear of getting a woman pregnant.

Reasons men choose to abstain from sex

There are countless reasons a man may choose to abstain from sex. Lack of intimacy, fear of diseases or pregnancy, asexuality and religious beliefs, among other reasons, can all factor into the decision to remain celibate.

The Health Benefits of Sex

Of course, taking a break from sex doesn’t mean you’re taking a lifetime vow of celibacy. If and when you choose to have sex again, there will be plenty of benefits waiting for you, including:

  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Lower stress levels
  • Boosted immune system
  • Decreased risk of cardiovascular events
  • Improved prostate health (due to ejaculation through sex or masturbation)
  • Increased relationship satisfaction
  • Improved self-esteem

If you’re choosing to abstain from sex due to low sexual desire, talk to your doctor about potential lifestyle changes, therapy, medication, couple’s counseling or other strategies that may help.
