Erectile Dysfunction and Other Side Effects of Diabetes in Men

When it comes to diabetes, men and women are affected differently, and we’re not just talking about erectile dysfunction (ED).

Women frequently have more serious complications and an increased risk of death compared to men. But diabetes is more common in men, especially type 2, which has been linked to lower testosterone levels. (Interestingly, higher testosterone levels in women have been linked to diabetes.)

The link between diabetes and erectile dysfunction

In men, the link between erectile dysfunction and diabetes may be twofold: lower testosterone levels may contribute to ED. But in addition, 45% of men with diabetes also develop erectile dysfunction due to nerve, muscles and blood vessel damage.

Because of a drop in testosterone later in life, men can develop diabetes at a lower BMI than women. But even at a lower BMI, these men often develop ED and lose muscle mass.

Other side effects besides erectile dysfunction

While many men may argue that erectile dysfunction is the most debilitating side effect of diabetes, there are also things like retrograde ejaculation (in which some of the semen is released into the bladder), overactive bladder, urinary tract infections and an inability to control urination.

Left untreated, diabetes can also cause problems with your kidneys, eyes and skin. Sometimes these issues manifest as blurred vision, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, bacterial infections in your eyelids, hair follicles and on fingernails and toenails.

Treating erectile dysfunction

Although every man’s situation is different, Viagra can help the vast majority of men who experience ED.

Viagra is the top-selling ED drug in the world and available by prescription from your doctor. The FDA requires a prescription to help ensure what you’re getting is real Viagra.

Talking to your doctor might seem embarrassing, but if all it takes to get you back to good sex is a prescription for Viagra, it’s worth it!
