Does the Keto Diet Really Help You Lose Weight?

A lot of people are trying to lose weight using the Keto diet. It’s a hard diet to stick to and some people may want to know if the whole effort is worth the results.

Several studies show those on the Keto diet lose more weight in the short-term. The diet does suppress
appetite and can increase your metabolism to burn more calories.

However, the truth is that it doesn’t work any better than other diets for long-term weight loss.

What Is The Keto Diet?

This diet incorporates food that limits carbohydrates and gets your body using ketones rather than insulin.

Ketones are produced by the liver from fat causing you to be less hungry. Insulin moves blood sugar to be stored as fat, which leaves you hungry.

The Studies

A 2013 review of several previous long-term studies of keto dieters showed that they only lost approximately two pounds over low-fat dieters. That amounted to “of little clinical significance,” according to the review authors.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) did a highly-monitored comparison study between keto and low-fat dieters. At the end of it, the low-fat
dieters lost about a pound more.

The keto dieters lost more mass, but researchers determined that was water weight.

Is Keto Worth It?

One of the complaints of the Keto diet is that it’s hard to comply with over time. It is one of the stricter diets out there.

However, people who do it like the idea that it connects them with different types of foods, like Mediterranean, something different than what they are used to.

Dieting, no matter which one you choose, has the same principle of burning more calories than you take in. That is the only way a diet will work. Keto does that too but using a different method.

Final Thoughts

Keto is a good diet in the sense it is healthy and not an unsafe, crash, miracle-driven diet.

Whether it will work for you in weight loss depends on your overall health, the exercise you do, and your
tenacity to stick with it.
