5 Myths About Diabetes You Should Know

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes is not something you want to have, as it could disrupt your career and many of the good things happening in your life.

And because of it, you try your best to stay healthy and prevent it from happening.

However, there are many myths that surround this disease, and here are 5 myths you should know:

1. Diabetes is curable

Diabetes can be managed, enabling you to live a somewhat normal life and prevent complications from arising.

However, sadly it cannot be cured.

2. Amputation is inevitable

If not managed properly, diabetes can damage your blood vessels over time, which can turn into
complications like nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

However, just because you have diabetes, doesn’t mean you will eventually get amputated. Just make sure you manage your diabetes, and it will not lead to these complications.

3. It is caused by eating too much sweet food

Diabetes is a chronic disease that is marked by high blood glucose levels, and it is not necessarily caused by eating too much sweet food.

It is caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin.

But that doesn’t mean you should continue to eat sweets if you don’t have diabetes because it could lead to obesity and other harmful conditions.

4. Diabetics can eat sugar-free candy and snacks

Yes, diabetics can and only eat sugar-free snacks as an alternative to sweets.

However, these foods have no nutritional value and can be high in fat.

They can eat these snacks once in a while, but it is not a good practice if they want to properly manage their type 2 diabetes.

5. Diabetics should avoid carbs

Carbs can raise blood glucose levels. However, they still provide energy for your body.

If you have diabetes, you still consume carbs from fruits and vegetables, and it is not practical to totally avoid carbs as you will still need the energy to perform day-to-day tasks.
