3 Tips to Prevent Gout Attacks

Gout is a painful condition that impacts about 3.4 million American men. This condition is an arthritic disease that happens when uric acid builds up in the body and causes crystals to form inside joints. The result is a lot of inflammation and pain.

The American College of Rheumatology has guidelines to prevent a gout attack, or a flare-up of considerable pain. The tips to avoid an attack include dietary and lifestyle changes.

1. Dietary changes

People with gout should avoid the following foods:

    • Anything with high-fructose corn syrup
    • All sugary drinks
    • Organ meats
    • Excessive alcohol
    • Desserts
    • Salt
    • Seafood

2. Lifestyle changes

Making several lifestyle changes can also limit the number and intensity of gout attacks. Those lifestyle modifications include:

  • Losing weight if you’re overweight or obese
  • Quitting smoking
  • Getting regular exercise

3. Medications to control gout

There are certain medications that are used to lower uric acid levels and control gout. However, medication isn’t an answer for everyone. People with frequent attacks (2-3 times a year), severe attacks, gout with a history of kidney stones, and gout that impacts several different joints are typically prescribed medication.

The medication, Colchicine, is typically used to control gout. The American College of Rheumatology suggests starting people with gout on a low dose to prevent attacks. The drug acts quickly for some. About a third of people see results within 24 hours while others need weeks or even months to see the positive impact.

Talk with your doctor

Making dietary and lifestyle changes alone won’t cure gout, but they can certainly help. Doctors may suggest a combination of diet and lifestyle changes along with a daily medication like Colchicine to keep problems at bay.

If you have questions about gout, it’s always best to speak with your doctor about the options you have for treatment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
