6 Food Fixes to Combat Gout Attacks

A gout attack, caused by a build-up of uric acid in the body, is three times as likely to occur in males as females. Gout is the most painful manifestation of inflammatory arthritis, and often occurs in the big toe. This extremely painful condition can sideline a patient for up to two weeks, and can even cause joint damage if left untreated. Most attacks occur at night, affecting your sleep and your ability to function clearly the next day. Although there is no known cure, limiting certain foods while adding others can shorten the gout attack, while also limiting its severity.

  1. Meat

The consumption of meat can worsen gout attacks. A good rule of thumb is to avoid organ meats like liver and kidney altogether, while limiting beef, pork and lamb.

  1. Alcohol

Drinking alcohol exacerbates gout, and can not only instigate an attack, but also make it last longer. Beer and hard liquor will make the symptoms worse, though wine does not seem to have a negative effect on gout attacks.

  1. Sugary foods and drinks

These types of foods should be avoided. Desserts and snack foods containing sugar make gout worse, and those who drink 1-2 sugary drinks a day double their risk of a gout attack. Choose natural sugars like those found in apples, and plain water in order to combat an attack.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been proven to lessen gout attacks. Talk to your doctor about taking a Vitamin C supplement to aid your body, and eat foods rich in vitamin C like peppers, strawberries, broccoli, and potatoes.

  1. Coffee

Drinking coffee offers some benefits to those with gout. Not only will a fresh cup of coffee perk you up, but drinking regular caffeinated coffee can help ward off gout attacks in the future.

  1. Cherries

Cherries lower uric acid and can reduce inflammation, therefore making them a great food to combat a gout attack.

Although a gout attack is an extremely painful situation, there are clear cut ways that you can reduce your risk of a flare up or reduce its severity once it happens. By focusing on what you eat and drink you will be able to have more control over the next gout attack.
