Gout and Footwear: Find Relief With These Tips

Frequently a gout attack is in your foot or toe making walking difficult. Inadequate shoes can aggravate your gout attack. Old shoes with poor cushioning, decreased motion control and inferior stability can make your day miserable. Shoes with little support like moccasins, sandals, slippers and mules do not give enough support to your feet. Heavy, steel cap boots are restrictive and limit movement although some men are required to wear them in work environments. Choosing footwear that supports your feet is a challenge for gout sufferers.

A study based on shoe characteristics and published in Arthritis Care and Research Journal  indicated: “Various footwear characteristics have been linked to the development of musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis of the foot and knee, low back pain, foot ulceration, hallux valgus, and hammer toes. Poorly fitting shoes have also been linked to foot pain in rheumatoid arthritis.”

Buying Shoes: What to Know

As you shop for new shoes, minimize the strain on your feet by looking for these characteristics.

  • Cushioning
  • Search for a shoe that provides midfoot cushioning in the footbed, as well as in the toe and tongue. The cushioning will absorb impact as you walk allowing you to be on your feet for a longer period of time.
  • Fit
  • Fit is crucial especially in the toes and heel. Many men choose shoes that are too long or too short. Measure your foot for the best fit.
  • Weight of the shoe
  • Lightweight shoes or shoes made with a canvas or mesh top will be beneficial to your painful feet.
  • Sturdiness
  • Don’t choose sandals or flip flops. You don’t want your feet to slide around as you walk.
  • Cost
  • You know that buying cheap $15.00 shoes will not have the support you need. Buying a pair that protects and cushions your feet will be worth it in the long run.

Athletic shoes, walking shoes, therapeutic footwear, and Oxford‐type shoes can all support your feet.
