How to Consume Turmeric to Help Gout

Many experts agree that turmeric can help fight inflammation, making it a good option for men with gout. In fact, the Arthritis Foundation actually recommends that people with arthritis consume the spice to help with the inflammation, pain, and stiffness that often accompanies arthritis.

There are a lot of ways to consume turmeric. From pills and drinks to add the spice to soups and sauces, you can get creative if you’re trying to treat the symptoms of gout. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Beverages

You don’t want to add too much turmeric to anything because it has a unique flavor that can overpower the rest of the ingredients.

For a smoothie, you can probably start with 1 teaspoon of turmeric and add up to 2 teaspoons if you have enough other ingredients to help mask the taste a bit. This could include things like blueberries and raspberries, spinach, yogurt, ginger, vanilla, banana, and cinnamon. You can also add a sweetener if the smoothie isn’t sweet enough for you.

With tea, you’ll typically use less turmeric. Start with just 1 teaspoon for 4 cups of hot water. You can add other ingredients to help mask the turmeric flavor. Try honey, ginger, cinnamon, lemon or orange. You’ll want to strain the tea before drinking it as pieces of turmeric sometimes remain even after boiling the tea.

Another beverage option is called golden milk. The base can be cow’s milk, coconut milk, soy milk or almond milk. Try mellowing the flavor a bit by adding maple syrup, honey or cinnamon. If you have gout, add a pinch of pepper, which one study showed can increase the bioavailability of turmeric by up to 2,000%.

Soups and dressings

Turmeric goes very well with carrots, ginger, and lemon. Try mixing them all in a blending and then warming them to a soup.

You can also add turmeric to olive oil and coconut cream to create a delicious salad dressing.

If you have gout, adding some turmeric to your diet can only help, not hurt, the symptoms.
