Prostate surgery

What to Expect in Prostate Surgery

Prostate surgery isn’t something every man with prostate issues needs. It is the last resort for some men who have severe urinary issues or for those with prostate cancer.

The operation is called a prostatectomy. It is a relatively safe procedure when compared to others. Recovery is rather quick also, depending on which type of surgery you have.

There are two types of prostatectomies:

1. A radical prostatectomy where the entire prostate is removed. This is usually done for men who have prostate cancer.

2. Simple prostatectomy where only part of the prostate is removed. This is done in men where the prostate blocks urine flow This surgery eases complications like difficulty starting and stopping urination and a frequent need to urinate.

What to Expect Before a Prostatectomy

Your doctor will explain all the risks of the various techniques used for this surgery.

Several techniques exist including robotic assistance in minimally invasive surgery and traditional open surgery.

There are also endoscopic options that do away with laparoscopic, robotic, or open surgery.

Expect your doctor to use a visual scope to look inside your urethra and bladder before your surgery.

This is to check your prostate’s size as well as your urinary system.

You will also likely do other tests including tests to measure your prostate, urine flow as well as a blood test.

Your doctor will want to know about all your medications and those will change before surgery.

You will also need to fast and will be given a bowel prep kit to use before your procedure.

The prep kit is to give yourself an enema so your bowels are clear before your surgery.

What to Expect Post Surgery

You will need a ride home because you can’t drive after the procedure.

It may take several weeks to fully recover before you go back to work or do strenuous activities.

Be sure to read all the literature your doctor provides before your surgery and ask questions.

The more you know about the procedure, the better you are at preparing for your recovery.
